Straight Guys Care Too

Whether you consider this is in or out, think twice about your outfit because there are guys with strong strong opinions!

As a classmate and I try to concentrate in calculus for our last finals, we can’t help but get distracted by these girls in our class that dress – well let’s just say not so pleasant to the eyes. One of our recent text convos looked like this:

Friend: What the hell is that dumb girl wearing? ???
Me: You look at her way too much. Just ignore her.
Friend: She’s in my line to the board… It pains me it’s like one of those things that is so gross you can’t turn away. You just go DAMN what happened?
Me: haha I know how you feel.
Friend: That girl is so trashy! Black bra that you can see. c’mon seriously.

After you’ve read this conversation it sounds like two normal college girls squabbling over some other girl in class. Well, no. It ends up that this friend of mine is actually a guy and no he’s not gay or into fashion and art. Just your typically college boy that wants to get passed tests and finals.

“High heels, ripped jeans, brown belt, see through shirt with the black bra, and the zebra print bag – none of those matched each other!” exclaimed my friend as we were walking out of class. Sighing he adds, “That girl has no fashion sense whatsoever.”

This whole remark made me laugh, but later it got me thinking, do guys really notice that much? This friend of mind never appealed to me as the type that criticizes a girl’s fashion, so I was utterly surprised later when I looked back at the conversation. So I guess straight guys do care more or less about how we dress. Never did I think that, in a town where I live in, I would meet a guy with such a strong opinion about clothes. It gives me all the more reason to think twice about what I wear before I leave the house. haha :)

Silk Ball Gown

Rare 1820s Raspberry Silk Ball Gown

Evening dresses of the 1820s were decorated with all types of fancy borders including rouleaux, the bands of bias cut fabric stuffed with wool or cotton that would provide additional body and shape at the hemline. In addition the hemline is decorated with a pinked silk ruffle above the rouleaux and above that a scalloped flounce accented with satin appliques that appear to be flower buds about to open. The dress has a slightly empire waistline with the bodice fitted with a series of three vertical darts on both sides of the bust.

The neckline is rounded and set off by delicate hand made lace and satin trim. The satin is carried around the neckline and extends in layered "petals" across the puffed short sleeves. Each petal is edged in lace and the sleeves are decorated with the same bud shapes and scalloped edging as is found at the hemline. Back closure with hooks and eyes. The sleeves are lined with a fine silk gauze that is deteriorated but this is not noticeable when on display.

The condition of this gown is remarkable! There is no shattering of the silk and only a few minor holes about the size of a pencil eraser are noted, a couple of which have been backed with tiny pieces of matching silk. There are also a few scattered and minor organic discolorations of the silk which do not detract and should not be unexpected on a piece of this age. Faint crescents of underarm discoloration are also present but again, do not detract. No noted weakness or deterioration of the fabric other than noted.

Orgeuil et préjugés

Encore l'esprit et l'imagination quelque peu pollué par la diffusion récente de l'adaptation cinématographique, j'ai eu un peu de mal à entrer d'entrée de jeu dans l'histoire.

Mea culpa, je suis assez faible en classiques anglais. Il m'aura fallu atteindre un âge quasi pharaonique pour lire mon premier Jane Austen.

En général, je ne suis pas fan de bluettes et il faut le dire, nous avons souvent tendance nous autres français à assimiler cette auteure britannique à ce genre littéraire.

Que nenni. L'écriture est certes très datée mais pas ennuyante. Plutôt délicieusement désuète. On se laisse agréablement embarquer dans cette romance. C'est agréable comme un jardin anglais, un thé à la main. L'histoire est finement relatée, la syntaxe est parfaite. Un peu de douceur dans ce monde de vulgarité, que cela peut faire du bien!

On se prend tour à tour pour la jolie Jane ou l'intrépide Elizabeth. On tombe amoureuse avec cette dernière du fameux Monsieur Darcy, l'arrogant et pourtant si séduisant homme.

Si comme moi, vous n'avez jamais lu cette indispensable oeuvre, jetez vous y à corps et âme perdus. Vous verrez, c'est délicieux!

Orgueil et préjugés est le plus connu des six romans achevés de Jane Austen. Son histoire, sa question, est en apparence celle d'un mariage: l'héroïne, la vive et ironique Elizabeth Bennett qui n'est pas riche, aimera-t-elle le héros, le riche et orgueilleux Darcy ?
